So I finally decided to give this game a try, and I find it a combination so far of two things I really enjoy.
Magic the Gathering/CCG's and Tacticle Battle Games like FF Tactics. I have yet to decide if I am going to spend any money on the actual runes/cards but I am thinking about it.
Anyway, a little bit about me. I am 26, male married and live in Orlando FL. I play World of Warcraft quite a bit, as well as Team Fortress 2 and various XBox 360 games. I played MTG for a good 5-6 years before stopping (Huge Money Sink and I didnt like the new art for the cards) and I have also played things like Warhammer and 40k and Warmachine, albeit briefly.
So hello, hope to see some of you around and have a game! Be gentle, I am still getting the hang of everything! :P

which set did you stop at? Cause some of the new art work kicks ass.....
also, pfft consol gaming. PC is where it's at!
But yeah welcome. Also, this too is a money sink, not as bad as MtG depending on which type you played, but still a money sink. (I play both I see my pay check for all of two seconds before it becomes card board and program code...)
But yeah this community is generally accepting, there are a few bad members who really like making themselves known... just ignore them lol.

I like the actual artwork for each card, its the card design that I cannot get my head around actually.
Also, I play both Console and PC Games :P
I figured this was a money sink but it does not look QUITE as bad. 20 Rune/Card decks are alot easier to work with over a 60+ card deck that is common in magic :P

Welcome to Pox Nora Stomphoof.
I do hope you enjoy the game as much as so many have in the past. It is a very well rounded game in it's category. I started out playing MtG in 1996 and Played D&D (the original awesomeness) back in 1984 (before most of you were born) so I see where you are coming from in that type of gaming experience.
Any time we can help you out or offer advice please seek out Yellow Names in the Lobbies of Pox we are the Player Mods and here to help. Especially getting new players addicted to Pox, uh, um.... I mean enjoying their games :)

Buy the runes! It will be the best thing you have ever done! (OK maybe not the BEST)
Once you can make your own battlegroups, as well as upgrade your guys and level them... there are a ton of possibilities. I have played this game for almost a year and a half now, and I love it still!

I got a couple of suggestions about things in the Tundra forums about runes and the like..
Seems that the SP (Savage something or other) are a good faction for newbies to start with. They sound like goblins from MtG :P
Can anyone suggest a good newbie friendly faction? Also, how does upgrading units work exactly?

SP stands for Shattered Peaks.
It consists of loads of weak and cheap units where the major tactic is overruling your opponent by being in a number advantage.
The disadvantage to SP is that you need to be quick with thinking and moving your units as you'll have quite a few units to move. You need to be careful as well as one or two AoE's might kill your units if you group them too much.
The advantage is that you get 2 AP upon deploying meaning that you can get to a font faster sometimes then your opponent, depending on unit played and map. You also get 12% (22% with the warbanner, the premium-only rune) of the nora cost from champions deployed back.

Each faction has it's own form of easy, so it depoends on what style of play you like....
SP does have the rune pool rune by mage seth so it's probably the easiest faction to get runes for.

Rune Pool? Bwha?
What about SL, the Dragon People... How newbie-friendly / forgiving are they? Dragon/Lizardmen sound like a blast :P

Sundered Lands is from what I hear a reasonably easy to learn faction and if played well can be strong. Their faction bonus is for full faction +14 defense. It might be worth trying out.
On a side note, if you're going for either SP or SL, I might have a few spare runes from them that you could use.

Welcom to Pox!
SL (the dragon guys) was my first faction and I really enjoyed it. It's fairly quick to pick up compared to some of the other factions so it's newbie friendly for the most part. Still, you will have a learning curve so don't get disappointed if at first you are losing most of your battles.
GL and have fun!

Well I'm also a newbie with a fairly extensive gaming background, I to have been gaming longer then most people I game with have been alive but thats a mute point, I actually find the younger players pose a far more unique perspective on games..
Anywho
I have been playing now for the better part of two weeks and while I donät have a terrible amount of games under my belt I have spend a great deal of time observing games played by more experianced players and I have to tell you one very important thing here. Like MTGO this game's experiance between the 'sample decks' and 'built decks' is very very dfferent.
The sample decks are actually quite horribily constructed, not to unlike MTGO starter decks.
I would say of all the factions I've seen in action probobly the most tactically forgiving is Underdepths. While not the strongest units it seems to me the ability to dish out a lot of damage makes up for poor positioning often enough. There spells like Banish for example are not to unlike Terrors in magic which effectivly can put a huge stop at key moments allowing for your own tactical mistakes to be forgiven as well. More importantly however is that they have a good selection of tacticaly strong units that allow for sneaky and unexpected tactics through the use of stealth, like through the use of the IMP which I see being used pretty regularly to sneak it to steal noras or make unexpected and key attacks to break up an opponenets coherancy.
The big drawback for them is when you play against opponenets with direct damage spells as most of the units don't have a terrible amount of hitpoints so you can very easily be softened up but all and all I've rarely seen an Underdepths deck get swept as often happens with other decks. They tend to always put up a good fight so that would be my recommendation (its the one I'm taking).
I agree with you though that flavor is not to be disregard, if you like Lizardmen, from what I've seen any faction can be very competative.

I have the Ice Golem cause I like Ice Stuff. I am gonna give savage tundra a shot as well..
However last night I played both the SL and SP decks..
And found SP to be alot more of my liking. Having a swarm of creatures was neat!
Also: I am gonna be buying a 100 Rune Pack come thursday (payday!) so I will let ya know when I got it then :P

Everyone knows that Ironfist is where it's at. No other faction is as hairy or drunk as we are.
