Chinese proverb, "May you live in interesting times."

Mission accomplished on that front in 2016, and easy to think this might trend up in 2017 and beyond.

    The Campaign Hallucinations Are Lifting

    Posted December 14th, 2016 @ 9:40am in #Trump

About half of the citizens of the United States think they elected a president who will “drain the swamp” in Washington DC and negotiate good trade deals for the public. But the other half believes they are living in 1930s Germany and the next Hitler just came to office. Those are very different movies, yet we all sit in the same theater at the same time. It’s trippy.

As I often say, the human brain didn’t evolve to give us a clear understanding of our reality because we don’t need it to survive as a species. All we need to do is survive long enough to procreate. As long as we can still make babies, it doesn’t matter that we are all experiencing different movies. You can be living in 1930s Germany in your movie and I can be living in 2016 trying to make America Great again, yet the population of humans is still growing. So living in different movies doesn’t matter as much as you’d think.

Trump has been meeting/talking night and day with tech titans, Al Gore, Kanye West, Mitt Romney, Bill Gates, DiCaprio and a host of other influential Americans. It seems like they chose the non-Hitler movie. Maybe Trump has fooled all of them, but I seriously doubt it. Unification FTW.

DJ plz try to put yourself in the position of a democrat leader. how are you going to keep the troops motivated?

    A) we need to disrupt trump in order to keep me in power
    B) trump is hitler

B is the obvious choice if your followers will swallow it.

    C) the rich are taking our money

it's the equivalent of the right wing "dey took ur jobs", always works

it does bug me that all the stuff i see people reposting from occupy democrats or whatever the Firk is about how now it's our turn to be the opposition party, and to fight the good fight

the hypocrisy evident in modern american politics annoys the Bane Shift out of me, more so because i see it as more often led by self-righteousness and a bifurcated belief system instead of facts

is there really an equivalence though? the rallying cry of the right when Obama took office wasn't 'hes hitler'. it was 'hes a socialist'. and that was true. it only felt like slander at the time because the left used to be smart enough to want to hide the fact that they are socialists. nowadays though....

it may be fair to say that you view him as a socialist, and that the people around you agree, and that that's as far as you'd have gone against him. but it's not true to say that that's how the right was represented to the left, just as the left is misrepresented to the right.

I think "just socialist" is among the kindest Obama was called when he won the election in 2008 in right wing circles.

I thought the rallying cry was 'he's Kenyan'

But it always annoys me when you people use the word 'socialist' because even after months of discussion i still don't understand what you mean by it.

in much the same way, if you think the only response to trump has been HITLER then you're not getting the full spectrum.

(i think the hitler stuff got a lot stronger with this election, for both sides. i'm pretty sure obama got more stalins than hitlers)

I mean, socialist seems this broad term Americans use for someone who is left and they don't like. Bernie called himself a "democratic socialist" and people lost their marbles over it. I don't think most people know what exactly that they mean by it.

    QFT.

Bernie talked the talk AND walked the walk. I have strong respect for the man because he was relatively honest, and also a dynamo. DNC chose HRC instead.

Trump is almost certainly going to be a big gvt politician. I think of big gvt politicians as socialistic. Hoping he is my kind of socialistic POTUS. We shall see.

I still think Sanders would have won the general election if not for DNC essentially forcing Clinton in the primaries. And I think we'd have all been better off for it. If nothing else it would have made for far more worthwhile debates.

@DarkJello It's interesting that your pick of West has him smiling, where some have him just sort of scowling or neutral.

Peter Thiel is such a baller. Looks like he is in zen mode or something in the above pic. Respect. Loved his RNC speech!

I am optimistic about all the meetings because conversation is sorely needed on dozens of topics, between all the big whigs. (Pun intended).

Feels like smiles are more unifying, now that the ugly election is starting to fade in the rear-view mirror. Conscious choice on my part.

I'm not saying that the definition I think of is necessarily the right one, i recently looked up the wikipedia page for 'libertarian' and it was much more nuanced than the definition in my head - so i don't want to be trying to be like 'my definition is the right one, yours is dumb-american-rightwing-mindsludge'. Because these things aren't necessarily well defined, and there are many people who use them in different ways - and that is confusing but also a symptom of the joyful diversity of language and how it evolves.

But, at least I have 'a' definition, which i could explain to anyone who asks. I'm not sure that some here have that - and that is worrying, especially when so much of their politics is defined by being in opposition to socialism. It points to a certain kind of opinion transference, rather than informed stances.

(I don't want this to be read as anti-right, I see the same thing happen on the left (they just use fancier words to justify themselves)).

@Sokolov The above @Geressen post is an example of why some people don't particularly like graphs.

    I don't think that's a logical reason, but it is a reason.
