I've never understood Dyslexia. It's always seemed like a sort of drunken haze, that one could overcome with focus. Everyone has experienced moments where their brain took shortcuts & mixed up a word or 2.

That is a terrible, and slightly rude, thing to say. Dyslexia is different from occasionally juxtaposing a "d" with a "b."

I was thinking more along the lines of missing the redundant "the" or filling in the correct letters for common words misspelled, but you're right I'm sure. I just can't empathize with them, that's all. I did preface my statement with "I've never understood".

I had a good friend in middle school who was Dyslexic. He tried explaining to me several times that it affected, directly, his ability to read & understand mathematics. I reject this notion out of hand, since these are learned skills, and so whatever the condition affects must be a more basic function.

EDIT: Ha! I was right. Directional confusion: ...being uncertain of which is left and right to being unable to read a map accurately ... is the reason for reversing of letters, whole words or numbers...

It's like a perpetual drunken haze. Can be overcome through focus, but often causes developmental issues in younger children due to the detriment.

Oh oh oh! Here's another one. "Dyslexia can impair a driver's reactions as much as a moderate drinking session... study which compared how quickly dyslexic and non-dyslexic drivers react to traffic signs..."
