Pretty much what the title says. Is there a reason to hide the rating? I don't like it. What do others think?
You can see people's ratings once they hit Battlemaster League. It's probably a tactic to encourage people to play ranked by making it seem like they aren't losing.
I believe the thought in not showing the rankings is a couple things: a) Encourage people to get to the level where they can be shown b) Allow people to play in a competitive environment without getting discriminated against for not having a higher rank. This allows people to learn and get the grasp of the game without getting "punished" or looked down on by the higher ranked people. Essentially once your rank is visible the thought is that you have "made it" and know the game to the point where you can be competitive.
