Worst thing about the american hand over heart thing is that some people mimic it, completely ignoring the historical significance in how and why they were written

Dutch anthem is supposed to be sung with arms down the sides.
I think the american one is supposed to be sung drunk by englishmen in a mocking tone.

oh saaaaayyyy can you seeeeeee... something spangled banner... da da da da da da da... ahmerica...

    there you go.

It's nothing like the same, while the burkini itself is a pretty trivial thing, the principles at stake, and the laws formed, are incredibly important and will have real implications on peoples lives (religious and non-religious alike).

    It's more like this: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/pol...n-disloyal-national-anthem-Labour-leader.html

Basically, opportunists and idiots spotting something irrelevant and using it to push either their nationalistic, racist, or simply political opportunistic ideas....

...oh wait, there are some similarities.

I really wish that people like you were sent to the front lines first, and after years of seeing terrible Bane Shift and potential PTSD I'd love for you to come back and see someone without their hand over their heart after you served.

If you don't want to stand behind the principles and foundation of what makes America so great please escort yourself the Firk out, you won't be missed.

It's obvious your young and haven't seen enough of the world yet, by all means go experience some third world countries. I'd give you maybe a week or 2 before you came back and were extremely thankful for where you grew up and live.

Too many liberal minded idiots today is part of the reason this countries in the shitter right now.

Lol at the pic of the military, Sokfail.

Mostly Gabby is just being pouty she isn't the "Darling of the Olympics", kinda like runner up in a beauty pageant.

I may be missing the point of your post entirely, but leaving aside the assumption that 'understanding that you've lucked out by being born in a first world country' must necessarily lead to Patriotism, why exactly does it matter if the hand is over the heart or not? They're clearly still being respectful toward the national anthem, if they weren't they wouldn't bother standing and facing off into the distance with the rest of the team.

Also, if your barometer for 'how is my country faring' is 'are enough people holding their hands over their hearts during the national anthem', I feel like you might be missing a few key points on how countries function. The equating of political ideology to both intellect and national prosperity is particularly welcome.

Here's another one to add to your list, Sok.

    Obama:

    US Code concerning anthem: https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/36/301

As far as why it's wrong or allowable, my opinion is that it really only matters when people are in a position of representing our country. For example, state employees (pres, military, agencies and departments etc) when on duty, civilians when in a forum that includes participants or viewers of other countries.

That's when I think it's important but to abstain is really not that big of a deal to me when it comes to civilians of any kind at any time. I might disagree but it's just not worth my time to fret over it.

"Vanities of vanities, and all is vanity."

If people want to watch the olympics, take note of the behavior of the participants, form opinions of their observed behaviors, and then share their opinions with others, then let them...
Not all of us have the oppurtunity to do so, and some of us that do choose not to, and instead distract ourselves with other things.

    Peace.

Well, yea, they can say whatever they want, and I can laugh at them for being inconsistent with their concern (and people can laugh at me for laughing at them, and so on).

I know most people don't care about people being inconsistent with their principles, it's just a pet peeve of mine :D

Btw, what translation inserts the word "and" in there?

Eep! You got me! That was my trans-litera-paraphrase-lation...

My favorite (besides good ole KJV) is The Message, though. Its increased readability is due to the translators' use of poetic license e.g. using slang and idioms, unlike the faux-readability in the NIV since they got hung up on 'accuracy'.
    I've always tried to paraphrase in creative ways (e.g. the Pharisees and Saducees rolled up on John the baptist with their Cadillac camels and bling-bling...) since the KJV is not understood, or known so well it becomes a recitation, or so I don't get caught up on thee, thou, and thine;

& & & I believe in a living, breathing Word (the Logos Yeshua Christ-Mind never died, baby) that can be channelled anytime, anywhere, anyhow so as to be recieved.

"Truth can never be told so as to be understood and not be believed." -William Blake

    You dig?

It's been awhile since I studied the Bible, but it was always fascinating how subtle changes in the translation can lead to different interpretations of the same passages.

My favorite Blake quote is "Active evil is better than passive good." It's an interesting way of looking at the world through the lens of motivation and desire, rather than one of intent.

Blake was an interesting fellow, to say the least.

Your argument is failsauce due to lack of evidence... PROVE IT! Hit me with your best Kant quote!

quotes don't make evidence, especially in subjective subjects

"Unicorns exist" - me just now.

and there we have it, undeniable proof that unicorns exist.
