I understand where you're coming from but, if your end goal is to play this game competitively against other players, you will reach that goal a lot quicker by grabbing a budget deck and playing against real players than you will grinding out the AI until you can put 5 legendaries in a deck.

Deck composition can carry a player a long way, but the player with the most legendaries in his deck does not get free wins against an equally skilled player with a cheaper deck in this game.

Incidentally, Sol Forge is a game I stopped playing because of the way they did their rarities.

Their "Legendaries" were incredibly powerful - though in some cases situation-ally so. They were "balanced" by the fact that it's a pure card game and can be countered fairly easily by certain effects.

Unfortunately, those effects were almost entirely relegated to "Exotic" so most players who hadn't played for months had no answers to cards that couldn't be killed, or just revived itself over and over or filled your entire board with creatures, etc.

    It was pretty frustrating.

Can't compare hearthstone or poxnora at all, hearthstone packs are broken up and gives you a much better chance of getting what you want.

Pox good luck getting a single card out of the 100 or so you want, too much bloat not enough solutions.

Faction packs would be a start, I don't think protectorate wraith packs will even work well enough anymore. Too many cards

How were drafts broken if they'd been perfectly functional for all the time up to transition?

    @Fleshbits
Back in the day when pox wasn't "basic attack online" and had 300 players on/5k total in ranked, there were enough opponents of any skill and collection, so you just spammed ranked, then traded gold for tickets and had runes from drafts.
Not so long ago already under dog there were weekly standard tourneys, which provided huge shard income - I once got ~5k in one weekend without multiboxing or anything.
How it's supposed to be now - no idea, but don't grind singleplayer in any case.

Grinding single player is pointless. By winning and advancing through the leagues you get better rewards.

You have an interesting definition of perfectly functional! :D

Drafts were basically broken every single expansion launch, causing server crashes and tournament crashes - SOE gave more tickets as compensation than it ever made in ticket sales. Some players amassed hundreds of free tickets in this way. There'd be drafts where some people didn't load into matches, others would end prematurely before everyone had played their games, others times no rewards were given even tho the draft concluded, etc. The most common one was drafts just wouldn't load and you saw a blank screen with no runes to select, but your tickets were already deducted...

Now, maybe it worked fine out of the gate for the expansion I wasn't there... but I am sure other players remember the drafts being quite frequently broken in general.

That said, that stuff isn't even the problem. The problem is that the draft system was tightly integrated with SOE's backend systems, and had a lot of code dependencies and specific hooks. An analogy might be that an engine was ripped off a Boeing 747 and then we have a Submarine... the engine would need to be heavily retrofitted to work with the Submarine.

Plus, SOE was not particularly helpful in the transition. Numerous things had to be fixed by DOG because they were passed off to DOG broken or with tons of stuff missing.

For example, ever wonder why you have to "migrate" your accounts? Because SOE refused to just transfer the player database. Instead, each individual player had to request their information be transferred.

There were more players than that actually before when it was REALLY "basic attack online" when most champions had only 1 or 2 non-basic attack abilities - since the change to the upgrade system champion ability average has significantly increased (though reduced slightly with the DOG revamp). Now there are a lot of abilities, including many attacks/damage abilities that are not basic attacks where very few existed originally. This does lead to problems though, with things like Seismic Leap and other "relocation with damage or other effects" now technically needing to trigger both the attack and relocation ability codepaths... (in the old days, all relocates did was relocate, so the code for stuff that listened for relocates never had to think about things that weren't just relocates).

Haven't read much of the thread but when hearthstone came out (still play arena/sometimes grind to legend on holiday trips) I was shocked at the cost of packs and the difficulty of F2P (hence why I 'specialised' in arena) compared to Pox. This was before DoG was around and made the game more f2p.

Pox is heavily F2P imo due to poxbox existing with every rune possible (except p2w harbs). I guess poxbox is a third party sites so not all new players know, but you can literally "print money" using PB. They have even asked you to do so and made it easier for players by adding symbols next to the profitable cards. Made up 2-3 full new decks over two months not too long ago while learning the game again. Perhaps an experienced player like my self could create a new 'f2p experience' tutorial that players could follow to jump in to pvp easier/faster just to show its at least possible?

Well drafts were indeed bugged sometimes, but nevertheless I got vast majority of my runes from them, and it was definitely better than grinding gold or playing with a deck you don't like. Sure if the backend wasn't transfered - that's another issue, though I still think it's important enough to have it recoded even from scratch by now.
As for playerbase - maybe it was higher including tg and sp earlier, but ranked peak was around WA exp.

I cannot win and thus cannot advance through the leagues. I simply do not have the inventory to play versus the same 50 level 99 players every night. Budget decks or not. Every time I PvP, I basically play for no reward at all.

    I've tried it several times.

You play to learn. You get your ass whooped you acknowledge what you did wrong. You dont do it again. Get into a scenario make a different move maybe it's right play and it Wins you the game. Tada the only person who truly has no reason to play is dmr

Out of the seven matches I've played this week, I learned:
    1) It would be nice to have a guy that does 18 dmg and has 3 armor.
    2) It would be nice to have a guy that does 15 dmg and has 3 armor.
    3) It would be nice to have a guy that is immune to physical dmg and resistent to magical
    4) It would be nice to have a guy that increases his dmg every round
    5) It would be nice to have a guy that has 7+ speed
    6) Don't attack people that have righteous deflection with ranged attacks.
    7) Click and read every unit, every round as fast as you can.

Sounds like you aren't correctly evaluating your games.

Note that the initial leagues give progress even for losses, and all ranked games give some reward, won or lose.

The game is written in Java, isn't it? That's strange enough all by itself. Maybe I am just an old man, but any game not written in C++ makes no sense to me.

Also, I had applied for SOE long ago. I could not believe some of the ******** ideas they has and some of the coding questions they asked. I knew maintainability wasn't exactly on the list of their priorities.

I dunno. There wasn't exactly much strategy to those matches. He hit me, I hit him.
    15 dmg > 10
    3 armor > 2
I don't know what else there is to evaluate.

Any decision making was in the deck building and like I said, I don't have any decisions to make. My deck build goes like this:

) Add every single champion I own in the faction, because I need 15 runes to make a BG
    ) add a cool spell or 2
) add 1 relic if I have one
) add a piece of equipment if I have one.
) If I had more spells, relics, or equipment that looked neat, remove the crappiest champion and add.
    ) Done

Maybe I will stream some matches later and post on the forums to see if anyone wants to give tips. The players are nice enough, and generous too, but I really don't think they can relate to what its like starting off new again, with the player base being what it is.

If you can maintain a 34% w/l ratio you will at least attain Legendary rating which will earn you 1500 shards and about a box worth of gold along the way.

Also you should join us on discord sometime. There is a decent amount od strategy and deckbuilding discussion that goes on.

If you have a solid budget BG you don't need the same inventory as these players. What you lack in BG, you gotta make up for in skill.

Assuming your opponent didn't use any spells, relics or equips, there are champions that are C/UNC/R that can do those. So I don't really get what you're complaining about.

Obviously this game is going to be hard to get into when there's a lack of new players. You have multiple people offering help and you just keep whining so I don't understand your end goal. Save us and yourself sometime by quitting if you're going to keep whining.

If you want help building a BG or learning how to play, ask for it. I play IS and ST.
