I highly recommend it. It's one of my favorite mangas, yet I can't stand the anime. The manga is way deeper and darker and have much better storytelling. It also doesn't help that the anime is heavily censored/cuts large portions of the story.

You will want to read the manga called just Yu-Gi-Oh!, as the one called Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist skips a large portion of the story.

I did a bit of research and it seems the english translations online just call volume 8 and up Duelist. So if you read online, you'll start reading Yu-Gi-Oh! then after 8 volumes, you start reading Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist. It makes me quite angry that the series is split up like that. It wasn't split up like that in Japanese and other languages, only the english one.
