autocottect owns my made up words. And as for common core, I really don't have an opinion for fed standards vs state standards on education. I do like that states will have more accountability since their own people can hold their own legislature to the educational results. Right now you can't really hold anyone accountable for poor test results because someone in CA has their results combined with another kid in FL when it comes time to be accountable. Education just never really makes the list of of important issues at the fed level. Was that really part of his platform or just something he was saying during primaries to make himself look less big govt vs the other Repub candidates? Or were you just trolling the insinuation that there'd be no educational standards?
Well, that's what Wikipedia says, and I remember some debates regarding education, I think he wanted to use the money from education on something else. I'm not trolling, I'm genuinely curious to how the already low education standards in US are going to change if he implements what he plans.
I'm curious, do average americans even know of people like William Burroughs, Kurt Vonnegut or Theodor Dreiser? Because that's the America that I cherish, not the one today.
Are fux given about the America you cherish? Let's be honest/realistic here. I see people liking America even less in the future as trade is renegotiated using the full influence of our consumer buying power with American interest as our main focal point. Bubye world socialism.
I'm not speaking in terms of economics. I am not competent to speak of that and it is of not much interest to me (at least at this point of time). What I'm talking about is culture. America is a big cultural brand at this point. The whole world watches your movies, reads your literature, listens to your music, takes interest in the lifes of your celebrities and etc. Prior to the 60s-70s, America was a great country with an amazing movement of true intellectuals, especially in literature (one of the few that I mentioned) and music(Iggy Pop, Bob Dylan). Today, I see all of that in a surrogated form. I mean art in general tends to be surrogative, especially in the way it deals with archetypes (check any kids movie and compare it to greek, celtic and scandinavian mythology). The cultural degradation in such form culminated with Andy Warhol, how he depicted in his art all of the dull and cliched tastes of an average philistine. What's interesting is that the english wikipedia doesn't say anything about the criticism that he endured in the early 60's by people who knew something about art and what meant the word kitsch. Now what are Americas values? Consume, twerk, rap, Firk? Does the american dream even mean something anymore other than acquisitiveness?
you only see the pop culture. its foolish to ascribe that to the population in general. honestly your complaint is coming across as we aren't entertaining you well enough. Maybe its your turn.
I'm not ascribing it to the general population, I'm sure there are the "5percenters". Nevertheless, you can't say that all the pop sh1te doesn't have an impact. Intelligence is not a trend in America. Consumption is the trend of Western Society in the 21st century. I know that because all of the countries that I've been to in Europe are a pathetic parody of what America is. Russia is sort of inbetween America and "Bydlo". Even outside the pop culture the arts are fairly vulgar and primitive, due to the fact that other than the stupid bourjois the majority are mere pseudointellectuals. If you think art is only about entertainment, then you know nothing about art.
So I repeat we never can have a true view of man unless we have a love for him. Civilisation must be judged and prized, not by the amount of power it has developed, but by how much it has evolved and given expression to, by its laws and institutions, the love of humanity. Who knew that Tagore would lend me some words concerning this topic. But seriously, read Tagore. I almost cried reading some poems (Hey, Gutsa, while we are at art, there's an artist for you).
Nicely put. If you look for the bad in a culture, you will see plenty of it, but perhaps you should look for more than that. or am i being too poetic
Enough with the poetry Guys, we've gathered here today to bash other people's opinions on politics and explain why those very opinions make them inferior to our clearly much superior views. It's not that hard really. Except for you guys. Cause you suck, your views suck and your whole culture will go to hell.
