I have that in my list as a Tier 3 (which is below Tier 2 and Tier 1). There are about 40 anime in Tier 1, 20 in Tier 2 and 20 in Tier 3. Basically, I don't watch enough anime
I saw Uta Kata. pretty weird show. It was ok. I liked how the girl would yell "UUUMIIII" at the beach when she saw it
I watched a decent amount of exactly one anime. I dunno what people are so hot about it with it. Maybe some kind of book replacement? ...
It's more like TV shows, but just animated, that's all. I mean, there are lots of interesting stories. And like books, there is a lot of styles and types of anime. I tend to watch ones that are more like sit-coms basically.
Meh. There's nothing particularly special about Anime compared to other TV shows, other than, of course, the difference of what you can do with animation vs. live action (but that's not specific to Japanese Anime or anything). Some visuals/story-lines are much easier to do with animation than with live action, due to the different aesthetics involved. Of course, this isn't limited to Japanese Anime, but that does have it's own stylistic and cultural roots (and thus different stories than what "Western" or Indian animation studios might produce). The focus of the topic is really just what I'd been thinking about at the time, rather than any attempt to raise it above anything else within the medium of televised programing... and that's too broad a topic for me to feel comfortable doing recommendations across the entire spectrum.
Not the kind of Anime I watch. There's nothing like it that I've ever seen. Ecchi stuff is unabashedly perverted, while not being pornographic. And also oddly endearing and earnest in a uniquely Japanese way.
I respect your opinion, even though I disagree. Hunter x Hunter is incredibly smart and heartfelt. Chimera Ant transcends its genre.
While im here i might aswell drop a few recommendations of my own. Death Note ~ One of my favourites, has a really cool story that twists and turns and keeps u gripped the whole way through. Basilisk ~ Another one of my favouritess. This one is a little dark. I really enjoyed this one. Beserk ~ A classic that everyone should see. Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop ~ Two classics that id recommend to everyone. 7 Deadly Sins ~ A fairly new anime that i really enjoyed. The characters are funny and grew on me quickly. I really enjoyed the quality of the animation too. Hellsing ~ Lots of action and just really cool. Alucard is a total bad ass. One Piece ~ Hundreds and hundreds of episodes of awesome. Some of the best fights ive seen in an anime and a really awesome storyline. One of my favourites. Deadman Wonderland ~ I enjoyed this one a lot too, lots of action.
I think they also did a reboot of either the Anime or the Movies recently. I wasn't paying too much attention so I'm not sure which. I dunno man, I've seen plenty of perverted-but-not-pornagraphic stuff in other types of Animation and of course in live action television. Granted, most of them did not involve ostensibly 15-16 year old students at a school or whatever. Also, culturally, "incest" (at least between non-blood related persons) seems to be more culturally acceptable in some nations than others (and there are drama's/romantic comedies that deal with that subject outside of Anime). But yes, I think the main thing is cultural differences are what form the main distinction here.
I think that while what you are saying is true, anime just tends to present those themes in a less threatening or pretentious manner? Like, if you want to watch a film about incest, it is probably french, and probably soft core at least, etc. while mainstream anime would tend to deal with it much more... casually, shall we say. And most other taboo or less common subjects tend to be explored in art-house type of stuff, or else have been regulated to HBO and Showtime. HBO, of course, has now become mainstream and seems to have influenced a lot of other producers to create more interesting shows.
I think maybe just more direct? For example, ecchi anime tends to have a lot more gratuitous panty-shots and the like, thrown out casually and directly, while another show handling similar subject matter would be more likely to tease it, or put on more mood-lighting. They'd also generally not have the "Kyaaa!" *SLAP!* sequence (or it'd be treated more seriously). *shrug*
I wasn't really thinking about panty shots and I am not even sure what to classify that under But with more serious subject matters, yea, it does tend to be more direct. And I also feel like that, compared to a lot US-based TV shows, it doesn't tend to be so serious or presented in a "teach you something" manner. In anime, serious subject matters are used more as plot devices or emotional appeal. Shows likes Bones are kind of preachy a lot of the times while super cheesy other times when they try to deal with certain subjects. Maybe it's the animated nature, but I feel like anime tends to handle dialog more naturally too. Characters are far too eloquent for me in many TV shows, tho some shows, like West Wing, obviously do it in a way that is just punchy and entertaining (even if it seems absurd to me some of the time).
So, to summarize those first impressions... That show(LN?) seems even more stupid than it's title suggests. I know one isn't generally supposed to judge something by it's title (The Legend of the Legendary Heroes was actually decent for example) but still...
