First off, love this thread. I also am a "voracious reader." One book series that I can reccomend quite highly would be the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. As well as anything John Grisham realted. Generally I stick to Fantasy, Romance, and Law. Graphic Novels: Sunstone Fantasy: Sword of Truth series - Terry Goodkind. Fiction: Bakki's Book Romance: Far too many to list. Tell me your tastes, and I can probably find you a book. Young Adult: Heir Apparent, Uglies Saga by Scott Westerfeld I'll update the list whenever I remember a book, and care to make an effort.
uhm, don't read all of star wars loads of the old EU is fanfic mary sue drivel. the wraith squadron books from the x-wing series are good. aaron allston I think the writer for those is. he died recently but from the old books he was apparently one of the good ones.
Michael Stackpole was the only EU writer I could read without wanting to vomit. Actually really enjoyable.
Thus spoke Zarathustra is a must read. If you want to understand Nietzsche and not just his commenters you have to read it.
You already figured out that OSC is a master. Kudos! "Guns, Germs, and Steel" "The Giver" "Agenda 21" (by Harriet Parke and Glenn Beck). "Michael Vey" series is pretty good.
It's a shame the I am Number 4 movie was so bad. My gripe with the that book series is how young they stay throughout the numerous books. I think it would've been better to spread the events over the course of years. A bunch of 14-16 year olds stopping an Alien invasion is pushing it.
Lots of overlap with the fantasy and scifi I like. You should queue up: - Max Gladstone - Joe Abercrombie - KJ Parker (start with "Sharps" or "The Folding Knife" standalone novels I guess) and possibly: - Anne Leckie (Ancilliary *) - Miles Cameron (The Traitor Son Cycle)
look into Glen Cook, Gene Wolfe, Steven Erikson, Bernard Cornwell, and Robert Graves gene wolfe is the star of that set. china mieville is also fantastic.
Depends on what you mean by impact. Are you asking for my favorite books, the books I think are the best or the books that have made a tangible impact upon my life?
Favorite changes rather frequently but currently would be Aeronaut's Windlass but thats mostly the result of crossing my love of nautical history with steampunk sci-fi/fantasy. I consider Name of the Wind (and its sequel) to be the best written fantasy novels of the past few decades and wouldnt be surprised if its required reading for schools eventually. As for books that impact me daily there is really only Sun Tzu's Art of War and the Bible. That said I really enjoy well written fantasy and sci-fi because of the amount of research that goes into the books. While many people prefer to write them off as fiction I like to read them to find bits of knowledge that may be useful later on.
In this case, move KJ Parker to the top of my recommended list. Just about anything he's written, except for the sequels to "Shadow".
Tolerable, actually, gets into trouble quite a bit. As for the other suggestions, Terry Pratchetts newer books read like train wrecks, Joe Abercrombie can't write worth Bane Shift, R. R. Martin never had anything to say to me Of course just my taste, but if you agree you might want to check those on my list out ... Seriously, Sapkowski and Lem are utterly fantastic
