If a champion is Branded and has Protection cast on it and is then attacked by a Paladin, Priest or Shaman the branded champion will take the fire damage and then will take the damage from the attacking damage second but will gain the Eater ability for the attacking champions type rather than Fire from branded. I believe this is the same issue that causes Branded damage to bypass Buffers, etc.
