What's up with Geert Wilders?

Sounds like he's part of what I'd call a sort of reactionary nationalist movement a la Trump, Brexiteers (obviously all within their respective nations), and so on. Taking largely the position of limiting/reducing immigration into the Netherlands especially from Morocco?

    And is on trial?

It's not clear to me if he's actually inciting violence against minorities or just advocating (albeit in "blunt" language and possibly based on false "facts" or what have you) a change in policy which would differ from the EU's stated desires and getting persecuted for it.

People with more knowledge on what all is going on, I'd appreciate the info. My Dutch is lacking to say the least, and I'm not sure what the best sources of information would be in English for the topic.

No real thoughts on it myself at this point, just a lack of information and an abundance of curiosity.

He was a massive piece of it, is still a massive piece of Bane Shift and will continue to be one.

    correct on both of you.

this article pretty much covers it:
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...-throws-netherlands-divisions-in-sharp-relief

    not his first trial btw.

he was found guilty and fined for 5000 euro

he said he was going to boycot the trial then used the right of last word of the defendant to give a 30 minute long speech, what a c-nt.

    I could translate stuff.

do you guys simply not register the word 'illegal'?

for example when you look at the above question is this what you see, [do you guys simply not register the word '_______']?

cuz I cant think of any other explanation other than willful obtuseness

Not even the cameras watching Wilders speak register the word illegal.

that is because he is against all non western immigrants and their children.

oh I don't have a clue about this Wilder joker. I was taking issue with the comparison to Trump and the endless effort of the left to misquote in order to herd their pc sheep followers down the path of socialism. carry on.

    Thanks for the information.

I'm not sure that asking: "You guys want more or less Moroccans? Less? Okay, we'll try to get that done." (However Firked up) should really qualify for inciting social unrest. Now, some of the other bullshit he seems to have said, sure, but the case seems to be based on that 2014 rally.

Maybe I'm missing context where he pretends to (or actually) pulls out a weapon and pretends to menace people or something... I dunno.

He certainly seems like a right(wing) ass, but I'm not sure about the specific case, then again, where my Dutch isn't great my Netherlands Law degree is virtually non-existent so... who am I to judge; and it seems likely he's said as much since then to (metaphorically) hang himself even if the original statement didn't qualify.

    On a different note:

What are the Progressives doing? They've only got D66 protecting the right side of the field, a pass by SGP to to VVD would leave them wide open to a run-in toutchdown with CDA running interference. Even with SPVD and Groen Links moving a bit more back. And SP. is just sitting there running in circles on the entirely wrong end of the field.

    Or

[Insert joke related to your preferred sport here.]

Apparently Geert Wilders says wild things, and people get their feelz hurt.

Even if he is racist and an uber [insert naughty word] and has a "trophy wife" and is a [insert another naughty word], Dutch law should be the focus.

Will he be muzzled? More importantly, how many others will be bullied into silence by the politically correct neo-brownshirts?

no see him ranting about muslims and saying the koran should be banned was deemed freedom of speech which is fine and he was aquited.

him saying "Do you want to get rid of *insert minority group here*" got him sued by 5000+ people and he has to pay 5000 euro fine and he gets free publicity.

    Funny :p

current goverment is VVD- PVDA alliance so faith in PVDA is low because they eh, well VVD is getting a lot of their stuff done I guess?
I expect a rise in SP ( socialist party) as a result
Link below are some past results and the grey named boxes are the coalition that formed the goverment ( it is a link because it looks really bad on a background this forum has, just expand it a little bit, have fun)
    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/43/Tweede_Kamerverkiezingen_1977-2012.png

as you can see the north is consistently socialist.

the grey ones still get the seats in the senate but the cabinet ministers are asigned from the coalition.
you'l notice the time between elections seem inconsistent, that is because sometimes the coalition has a bad disagreement and as a result the cabinet falls.

BTW the cabinet and coalition used to be formed by the formateur appointed by the queen/king but since 2012 the senate is in charge of this.

I think the main thing is that there are two issues he's talking about.

Acceptance (or in his case, rejection) of mass refugees (he initially said specifically Muslims from Syria and the like, but since changed his position to anyone from regions with enemies of the US in them) that he does not believe have been properly vetted; and things related to illegal immigration (primarily from Asiatic and central/south-American nations, though obviously there are some from just about anywhere) which is a separate issue.

And now back to your regularly scheduled non-US political discussion (plus whatever other final comments others have I guess... just figure we've got enough threads on that stuff already without bleeding into others).

    Also...

Is it "free" if he has to pay 5k? ;)

I mean, if anything Trump mentions about immigration that doesn't have the term "illegal" in it is a "separate issue," then sure, he only meant "illegal immigration," but that seems like a circular argument to me.

In any case, here's what Trump's campaign puts under "Immigration"
    https://www.donaldjtrump.com/policies/immigration

I'd note a number of these bullets are not about "illegal immigration" in general, but just immigration. And the campaign itself does include refugee stuff under this heading as well.

There's also the H1B1 VISA thing:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/17/u...-visa-program-he-used-for-his-own-models.html

“I will end forever the use of the H-1B as a cheap labor program, and institute an absolute requirement to hire American workers first for every visa and immigration program. No exceptions."

    https://www.wired.com/2016/11/trumps-immigration-crackdown-spark-tech-brain-drain/

    ~

I honestly don't think it's a stretch to say that Trump has some anti-immigration stances in general (at least publicly/in office), especially when we'd happily acknowledge that he is "Americans first" (how do you put Americans first without putting immigrants second?).

I am just happy I don't fall under any of the categories he has targeted - my green card is based on marriage :)

    @Geressen

So I'm seeing a lot of polls favouring Wilders' party (PVV):

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion_polling_for_the_Dutch_general_election,_2017

Imagining he does get the most votes, will this translate into forming the government, or will he need to get an absolute majority? Is there any other major parties that would work with him?

I can imagine an entente cordiale of opposition parties forming a coalition government to stop him getting in.

  20. Geressen

    Geressen Forum Royalty

the coalition needs a majority of seats. most parties do not like Wilders.

    so it is unpredictable.

next elections will be march 2017 so we will see what happens after all parties made their campaign goals public and the election campaigns start.
