For those that would rather read than watch the video: Essentially there has been some complaints about the apparently undisclosed nature of the standards used for a new "Restricted"/Censored mode of Youtube that is currently available to opt into. Especially and specifically from the LGBT community. Youtube/Google gave a vague response which didn't address or apologize for any of the perceived issues, etc. Phil DeFranco is asking what other people think about it, and even what it's for. In his words, it doesn't seem to make much sense to have such a mode for "1-4%" of users... (Especially since there is already a "kid friendly" Youtube application available for those that wish to gate what their children watch) and I'd add that those users that don't want to see such content can... you know... not watch it in the first place if they don't want to. This is just a guess, but I'm guessing it's actually for China. Or rather that the (clearly algorithmically based) censorship of the "Restricted" mode is based on or a permutation of Chinese internet censorship. Google has been frequently discussing it's desire and steps to try and make a mode of Google Search which is appropriate to the Chinese government... so it makes sense that they would also work on a Youtube modality/censorship that would also please the Chinese government (where it would not be "opt in"). Homosexuality in particular is generally persecuted in modern China; so at least that aspect of it fits. In theory it could also be for other markets with strict rules on what sort of data can be transmitted or displayed. Anyway, like I said it's just a guess, I'm curious what you folks think it's for, and/or think about it in general, especially if any of you have actually tried the restricted mode yourselves.
no you did the right thing. it is no longer suffering now. it is sad but sometimes something is in such a bad way that there is no other way to help it. humanely ending it is the best action.
