Tournaments

    Hello everyone

I thought it would be interesting to discuss Tournaments in Pox Nora and how they could be a valuable asset to the game. I would like to start the discussion by offering a system for Tournaments and how it why I think it would be good for the game in general.

Imagine there are two general kinds of Tournaments:

    1. Gold Entry Tournaments
    2. Ticket Entry Tournaments

A Gold Entry Tournament costs some Gold to enter. In this kind of Tournament you can win Tickets.
In Ticket Entry Tournaments, which cost Tickets to enter, you can win Booster Packs.

Now, those Tournaments rotate automatically. Let's say from 2:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m, there will be a Standard Constructed Gold Entry Tournament, then it disappears, then from 2:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., there will be a Expansion X,Y,Z only Draft Ticket Entry Tournament, and so on.

And then there are different specific kinds of Tournaments:

    • Constructed
      • Standard (as in ranked)
      • Expansion X,Y,Z only
      • Circus
      • Faction X,Y,Z only
    • Drafts
      • All Expansions
      • Expansion X,Y,Z only
      • Exotic only
      • Limited only
    • (the possibilities are endless!)

Now, why do I think this would be a great idea?
It has to fulfill a number of criteria. It has to be reasonably easy to implement, it has to be worth the time required for implementing it, and it has to be fun.

    For the implementation part:

We have had Weekend Tournaments in the past. For one hour on a weekend, there was a unique new button which you could click to join the Weekend Tournament with its special Weekend Tournament rewards. After one hour, the button would disappear and you couldn't create a Weekend Tournament type Tournament anymore. The code for that should already exist and might be used as a basis.

    For the fun part:

If you read this thread so far, I hope you already agree that it sounds fun. But there is more to this, one issue that I personally experienced with Pox Nora a few times:

After all my decks have been nerfed, or if I haven't played Pox Nora for a while and I just want to play a round or two in my spare time, I do not choose Pox Nora.

And I do believe that this is the case for many newer players as well. Think about it: For a competitive deck, you need to know so many Runes and effects. Even then, if you either lack the skill or the Runes, playing ranked feels horribly frustrating. The transition from Single Player to Ranked Play is really hard,
and playing non-ranked casual games may feel not so very rewarding.

It's no news if I say that the learning curve is very steep.
    So, how would Tournaments help?

The knowledge or Runes needed for a constructed Tournament limited to a few expansions should also be great for newer players, as they don't need to know all Runes -- just those from the respective Expansion.
And with the chance to score a Ticket if you get a good rank within a Tournament, participating in those Tournaments should also feel very rewarding. Indeed, you can experience richness of the entire game in a Draft Tournament!

    For the Developer's Time part:

As elaborated in the previous section, it's a way to ease the way to ranked game for new players. This kind of Tournament system would provide a true and complete free player experience, while also providing the incentive to get as many Runes as possible in order to be capable to participate in all kinds of Tournaments.

By having two different kinds of entry fee -- gold and tickets -- the amount of free Runes given out can be regulated. Ticket Drafts would not grant the drafted Runes, but would give you the chance to win Booster Packs if you win a Tournament.

Should Tournaments prove to be fun, and I believe they would, it would both make it easier to rebalance old Expansions and to create new Expansions.

    Conclusion

I believe Tournaments is the most powerful unused resource we have in the game.
All it needs is to take the Weekend Tournament idea, diversify it and make it available all the time instead of once a week for a few weeks per year.

I hope you like the suggestion.

    Best,

We all love tournaments and last time I checked the greens did aswell. But if I recall correctly from various Q&A's the problem was that legally they were not aloud to run tournaments (Gambling laws) so they have to disable them until they could get a lawyer in to find a loophole around the problem.

soulforge does their tournaments in a way that you don't have to play the matches all at once. you que up and play whoever has the same tournament w/l record as you. and you can que up anytime until you get your 3 matches done (or whatever the format is). this is ideal for a low playerbase but maybe a bit unsatisfying as you aren't pitted against a finite group.

I don't see how gambling laws apply if the entry fee is free gold. they just haven't done it because they haven't figured out the best way to monetize it. greedy F's.

Wanting to make a profit on a game, what horrible people. Why can't they just be like Electronic Arts and give everything away for $60?

After this derail, let's get back to discussing Tournaments.
Is it true that we cannot get Tournament rewards due to legal issues?

And if so, could we as community do something?

The "superior" adults get filthy rich thanks to the tool called "government" that allows them to legalize violence against anyone they deem "bad". The fact that the vast majority suffer while a few percent acquire VAST sums of cash, by legally stealing it from the masses, is NOT just random chance. It is called Krapitalism (AKA "Crapitalism" or "Crony Capitalism" or "Communism" or "Enlightened Socialism"), and it is the dirty little secret of the modern and regressive era. That is why you are not allowed to "gamble", because the nanny state demands obedience... or else. Basically they are our massahs. Murica has the most laws of any nation in the history of the entire planet, but the powers that be are just getting started. Buckle in folks, cause the ride aint over. Better yet, place head in sand and keep living the blissful dream. xD

Tournament idea is straight up legit. Hope it happens. Well played iPox.

Gambling laws doesn't make any sense as being the problem. Their are websites like fantasy football and basketball where people wager thousands of dollars and that's not considered gambling? Only in america would it be an issue to have a tournament with cards for in game tickets and be called gambling. How they figured out a way around it using real money i am sure pox can also if this is indeed the issue.

    So, here is the Plan(s):
    • Plan A.
They figure out how to make it happen, we get Tournaments and everybody is happy. Yay!

    • Plan B.
Assuming Tournaments for Gold are okay and we can have these. We need to figure out a way how to make implementing Gold Tournaments worthwhile for our Devs.

    • Plan C.
Just live with the already existing Tournament system and organize them ourselves.
Since we cannot directly influence Plan A, and Plan C is the worst solution really, I guess for now, discussing Plan B would be appropriate!

    Ladies and Gentlemen, ideas please!

We would love to bring back tournaments in one way or another as soon as we can, the gambling laws are a stumbling block, but if we cannot find a way around them we will still be looking to do something with tournaments, even if they are completely free entry all the time.

There are also a number of issues with the current system that need to be fixed before it can be re-introduced, so once we hit our top priorities, expect to hear some more about tournaments.

And don't worry, we haven't forgotten about those with tickets.

A gold only tournament needs to have a prize worth more to the winner than the gold it costs to enter, but DoG needs to get more gold or break even on the value of the prize they're giving out.

A box of Extended Box is approximately 32k gold. If 8 players enter a tournament for 4k gold each, that covers the cost of one box. With 10 packs, first place could get 5 packs, second would get 3, and third could get 2.

It could also be done with rune shards instead of packs. If first prize gets 800, second gets an exotic 450, and third gets 250, the total prize pool is 1500 shards. An 8 player tournament with an entry fee of 200 shards or a 16 player tournament with an entry fee of 100 shards would work.
