pounce should be considered a melee attack and should work with blade of the snake, otherwise all non basic attacks shouldnt proc blade of the snake.

It is not a close combat attack. It is a movement ability with AE1 damage.

whirl of blades, flamestrike, pummel, etc etc are all attacks.

If it is acting like a close combat attack in some instances, I'd be interested in knowing about that.

Because they are different abilities and function differently.

The way Pounce works is that you click on it and select a space to move to. It's primary mode is movement so it is classified as such.

Note that Pounce will actually damage adjacent champions that are Stealthed - something you could not do if it was a real attack.

The damage portion of Pounce is closer to a Nova ability in that sense.

Could it be done as an attack? Sure. I think there's good arguments for being one and for it not being one. It'd have a bunch of ramifications, though, for example, if it attacked one champ, and got killed by damage shield, it wouldn't finish attacking the others, and it would trigger Block, no longer damage stealthed champions, etc. In other words, it'd work very differently if it was an attack.
